Question 6: Consent to Share - Is it There? (In Your Data Contract)

The information highway in agriculture is moving fast.  With new technology on the farm growing exponentially, data is moving as quickly as a car on a racetrack.  While a farmer knows their primary partners, their operation’s data can also be shared with other companies participating in the technology space.

Thus the need for Question 6: Does the tech company obtain a user’s consent before sharing user data with third parties? Companies that are certified by Ag Data Transparent are clear in their contracts if consent for this type of sharing will be obtained before doing so.

Darcy Herauf, Director, Farm Credit Canada’s Ag Expert, shares why consent is an essential element of transparency.

“Expressed consent is the corner stone of Ag Data transparency, in my opinion.  It cements the fact that the data entered and captured in our system (or any ADT Certified company’s platform) is truly owned by the farmer and they get to choose who it’s shared with, and equally important, who it’s not shared with,” Herauf says.

“I think it’s also important to obtain their consent with language that is easy to understand and makes it very clear as to exactly what data they are consenting to sharing.  ADT rules are centered around trust and gaining users consent before sharing their data is fundamental to this.”
